Riga

With a population of nearly 800,000 people, Riga is one of the largest cities in northern Europe. With the quaint beauty of the Old Town, the splendid architecture, the various stretches of parkland and the nearby beach resort of Jurmala, Riga provides something for everyone. In Riga, you will find a typical European city with many cosmopolitan shops. Morever Riga is an important centre of learning demonstrated by the many cultural events, international exhibitions, scientific conferences and seminars that take place every year in this, Latvia's historic captial city.

Here in Riga you can enjoy Russian culture, go to the Russian Theatre, enjoy Russian cuisine, visit the orthodox churches and, if you come in summer time, you can experience the many Russian festivals taking place in Jurmala. Riga provides the ideal environment to learn Russian. You can stay with Russian-speaking hosts and there are many newspapers and magazines, radio and TV channels, cinemas and theatres all in Russian.

The School

The Education Centre DURBE (EC DURBE), an LSI partner school, has more than 10 years experience in teaching languages. EC DURBE is the only private language school recognized by the Latvian Ministry of Education and Science. As a member of such international organisations as FIYTO and ALTO we stay up to date with the latest teaching trends and as such can guarantee you courses of both the highest quality and value for money.

The school is situated on one of the main streets in Riga and occupies 2 floors of an old Art Nouveau building right in the heart of the town. All classrooms are fully equipped with the latest technology including free Internet access. There are many cafes in the school vicinity where students can grab a cup of coffee or a bite to eat during school breaks. The school is within walking distance of many places of interest: the Old Town, the Opera house,various cinemas, sports and leisure centres are just 5-15 minutes away. You will be met by our friendly, welcoming staff ready to help and assist you. Our tutors are not only experienced professionals specialized in the teaching of Russian as a foreign language but some also have additional qualifications in cultural studies, business, science, law etc.

The Courses

General and Examination Courses

General Russian (20 lessons per week)
The course covers all aspects of the language and aims to develop the student's ability to communicate effectively in the shortest possible time.

Intensive Russian (30 lessons per week)
The intensive course is designed for students who wish to maximize their time spent in Latvia as effectively as possible. In addition to General Russian, students will master situational language through discussions and role play in order to further enhance all the skills necessary for confident communication.

Combined Courses
Students attending a General or Intensive course can combine morning lessons with individual tuition in the afternoons or evenings. This course is recommended for those students who would like to practice a particular skill (e.g. speaking, grammar etc.) or need assistance in preparation for presentations, seminars, job interviews etc.

Tailor-Made Courses
Tailor-made courses are an important part of our work at EC Durbe. We have extensive experience in creating specially designed courses to meet the specific needs of small groups. Many professional people or business executives have experienced the flexibility of our tailor made courses.

Individual Tuition
This course is designed for those students who need to make rapid progress or who wish to concentrate on particular area of language

Semi- Intensive Russian (8 lessons per week)
This course is designed for people living in Latvia or for visitors who are staying for 1 month or longer.

Part-time Russian (16 lessons per month taught in mini groups)
This course is specially designed for people living and working in Latvia.
