Switzerland is still best known for its financial institutions, fine cheeses and chocolate, watch making industry, scenery and an excellent public transport system, but it also has many cultural attractions, and leisure activities to offer. The Alps and pre Alps, which together cover about sixty percent of the country offer spectacular scenery and excellent skiing, snowboarding and hiking. For those who would rather just watch, Switzerland hosts a plethora of organised sporting events, from the Engadin Ski Marathon in winter to the Tour de Suisse cycle race in summer.

Situated on a lake with a beautiful view of the Swiss alps, Zurich is Switzerland's largest city and Switzerland's key financial, cultural and educational center. The picturesque old city with cobbled streets flanked by town houses, ancient churches, boutiques and street cafés contrasts with the modern architecture of the financial district. With its cinemas, theaters, the world famous opera house, the university and the internationally recognised ETH, museums and galleries, Zurich with its beautiful surroundings has something to offer for every taste. Relaxing piano bars, and lounges as well as nightclubs playing music styles ranging from Hip-Hop and House to Jazz and traditional Swiss folk music can be found throughout the city.

One of the world's most developed public transport systems affords easy access to the surrounding villages, vineyards, mountains and beyond. From here you can go hiking, mountain-biking, swimming in summer or skiing in winter. Further afield, the cities of Basel, Berne and Lucerne can be reached within an hour by train. Geneva and Lausanne, at three hours, takes a little longer but the extra time spent is rewarded by the spectacular views along the way. Situated in the centre of Europe, Switzerland is an ideal base from which to visit the surrounding countries of Austria, France, Germany and Italy.

Lugano

Did you know Italian is spoken in Switzerland? It's the 3rd language in the country and a whole "Canton" (state) of 300.000 inhabitants uses it as its main language. This Canton is called Ticino. Situated in the south of Switzerland, it borders Italy. Shaped like a triangle, its southern tip is just 30 minutes from the Italian fashion capital Milan. Hamish Henderson, the famous Scottish poet, songwriter, socialist, humanist, soldier, intellectual, and living contradiction (as he liked to call himself) used to call Ticino "Italy that works".

Lugano is set in an area of great natural beauty, on the lake that bears its name, surrounded by mountains. It's a town of about 50,000 people and being the third financial centre in Switzerland it has something to offer for everyone, with its elegant shops, restaurants and museums it is often the venue of art exhibitions of international import. A variety of sports are possible in the vicinity, for example ice-skating, climbing, canoeing, plus those sports traditionally associated with lakes such as windsurfing, water skiing etc. For winter sports, many ski resorts are close by, the nearest being only 30 min. away from Lugano.
